Course Description:
Health education should help the student understand and exercise responsibility related to the function of a healthy mind and body. Students will receive instruction to become more effective with all aspects of their personal health---mental, physical and social well-being. The goal of health class is to help the students create good habits that will allow them to be healthier and more active adults now and in the future.
Course Objectives:
The student will:
1. Recognize one’s potential for controlling one’s own health
2. Analyze mental, physical and social health as it relates to total health
3. Recognize components of sound nutrition as it relates to healthy lifestyle and the digestive system
4. Discuss drug use, misuse and abuse and the role of peer pressure in drug use
5. Discuss alcohol use as it relates to mental and social problems
6. Discuss diseases that can affect today’s lifestyle and understand what are repercussions of these diseases
7. Analyze what actions to take using first aid in emergency situations
Course Evaluation/Attendance
1. Students will be graded on unit tests, a class notebook, homework class assignments, attendance, newspaper articles, class participation, and a final exam.
2. Some tests will be quizzes, very short in length but unannounced. Unit tests, as well as the final exam, will be announced well in advance. Since your notebook is included in your grade, it is important that you keep all health assignments and tests in your notebook.
3. Notes will be taken during most class periods, therefore, try to be present each and everyday. Good attendance will only help your grade.
4. Course will use reading, lecture, videos, handouts and worksheets as forms of instruction.
5. Class grading scale:
A: 100% - 93%
B: 93% - 83%
C: 82% - 73%
D: 72% - 66%
F: 65% and below
Course Conduct
1. Please do not talk while a teacher or another student is talking.
2. Follow directions the first time they are given.
3. Be prepared and in class before the tardy bell.
Will result in step points or points off your grade!
4. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
5. No food, gum or drinks allowed in classroom.
Will result in step points or detention each time.
Special Requirements for Course
1.Textbooks-You will be assigned a textbook that you are responsible throughout the course. Do not destroy or place any marks in the textbook.
2.Supplies- Students will be responsible for paper, pencil/pen and notebook every session of class.
3. Newspaper Article-You will be responsible for 7 health related articles in the nine weeks that will be due in the week ahead. These can be found in outside sources of media.
